Name: Benny
Owned By: Leah Maurice of South Burlington
Story:
This is Benny AKA "Starsen Bubblicious" He is from Rhode Island, and was originally destined for the show ring. His mom, and siblings are champion show dogs, but Benny fell short when his ears flopped over at
4 months old. Floppy ears officially demoted him to "pet quality." The breeder wanted to keep him as she was very attached to him. She had bottle fed him for months as he was the runt and couldn't compete with the other pups. Fortunately for me, she decided to adopt him out. I originally e-mailed her with just a list of questions about the breed.
I was hesitant about getting a chihuahua due to their reputation.
After several conversations with her I learned that "Bubbles" soon to be Benny was looking for a home. I was still a little hesitant but he sounded like the perfect match for me! A couple of weeks later I drove down to Rhode Island to meet him, and possibly adopt him that day.
When I got there all of the other puppies came running toward me and jumped on me. Benny however took a bone and hid in his tunnel. I was always told to never choose a puppy who is uninterested in you. Well, Benny was interested in only one thing and that was staying in his tunnel with his bone. I eventually bribed him out with some steak. I was a little hesitant about taking him home because he was so timid, but my gut instinct told me that he was perfect for me. The transition was scary for him as he taken from his litter mates and came home to a cat that wanted to eat him. He wanted to be held constantly, and it was very hard not to baby him. I held strong and made him walk everywhere and let everyone pet and handle him. It all paid off because he breaks every chihuahua stereotype you can think of, except for wearing ridiculous clothes! He is very friendly, especially if there are treats involved! He loves meeting new people, and I still find it amusing when people ask if he is safe to pat! He has the ability to bring a smile to peoples' faces by just prancing down the street! He has even turned several "small dog haters" into "small dog lovers." He rarely barks, and has NEVER had an accident in the house.
He loves to fetch, lay in warm laundry, do tricks, walk downtown and
play in the grass at the waterfront. Over all he is just a really sweet dog and a great companion, and I'm so thankful he ended up with me!

Name: Baci
Owned By: Melinda & John Micheletto of Essex Junction
Story:
Hi, my name is Baci, which means “kisses” in Italian. I’m a miniature Australian Shepherd and am about 8 months old, although we aren’t quite sure when my birthday is, we’re assuming sometime in June 2007. The vet looked at my teeth to tell how old I was, what’s with that??? I lived the first 2 months of my life in a small cage in a dirty puppy mill with about 250 other dogs and puppies where my food was covered with flies and I never had clean water. Nobody ever paid any attention to me. All 250 of us were rescued from there and were taken to a temporary shelter where I spent the next 4 months of my life. Although the shelter was so much better than the puppy mill and I was fed and watered on a regular basis, it was still loud and scary.
My “mom” saw me in the shelter in October and fell in love with me. I guess she felt sorry for me because I was so scared and would hardly come out of the corner of my kennel. Finally, I decided she was nice and let her pick me up, but it was still scary and I shook like a leaf. She wanted to adopt me right then and there, but there was a lot of paperwork to be done and I still needed to be neutered (what does that mean?). Finally, in December, a rescue group came to my rescue and that’s how I found a home in Vermont with my new family!
I now live with 2 sister dogs, who I absolutely love (and I think they like me okay too!). I like to follow them around the house, chase them in the yard, and do “big dog” things. They sure are smart! I also have a sister cat who pretty much ignores me. I just like to look at her, she’s really neat!
One of my favorite things to do is curl up on one of the dog beds with one of my sisters. They don’t mind sharing, which is great. My mom must think I’m really cute, because she keeps taking pictures of me. She says I’m really photogenic (what does that mean?).
My mom brings me to Pet Food Warehouse so I can get socialized and learn that new things aren’t so scary. I can now walk in on my own and even peruse the aisles some. The nice people that work there ooh and ahhh and tell me how cute I am and there’s always great dogs to meet. I’m slowly learning that people are nice (mainly because they always offer me cookies!) and life is pretty good. I even wag my tail at people now!

Name: Katie & Ellie
Owned By: Debbie Safran of Starksboro
Story:
I know I'm supposed to only submit one... but when you have three
hounds and they all have special stories it's hard to choose!
Katie and I just celebrated 10 years together - that's right, she's
been your customer for 10 years! At 13.5 years old, she's not quite
as obnoxious as she used to be (sticking her snoot into your aprons,
for instance, when you didn't get her a treat quickly enough!) but
she's still got that Katie Attitude we all know and love! Katie was
at Greyhound Rescue of Vermont for over a year - they had a hard time
adopting her because of her personality, which matches her hot-pink
collar! But when I first met her, she just laid at my feet. I guess
it was meant to be! She's been through a lot over the years - much of
it self-imposed (breaking into a cupboard and eating 12 ounces of
dark chocolate, for instance, and who can forget the time she went
from Pet Food Warehouse customer to Emergency Vet Clinic patient
after eating a cat toy covered in rabbit fur!) - but she's my Katie G
and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Ellie came to us 8 years ago and the staff at PFW watched as she
slowly emerged from her shy-Ellie-shell into the pushy gal she is
today! Her biggest challenge, of course, has been her battle with
osteosarcoma. She's 11.5 months post-amputation (Nov 6 will be a
year) and she's truly an inspiration.

Name: Doc
Owned By: John Howe of Shelburne
Story:
This is Dr. Seuss (Doc). He is a 14.5 year old Shep/Greyhound mix. Doc was rescued from the pound on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands when he was 4 weeks old, after his litter was left in a junkyard dumpster. He is the only survivor of his litter. He has been my friend and dear companion for many years. However he now has a different role. In 1999 a landlord made the decision "no dogs". So Doc left Boston, MA and returned to Shelburne, VT to stay with my mom for a while. The bond that formed was so strong I decided to ask Doc to remain in Vermont and watch after my mother. His loyalty and love for his family is still his strongest trait, as this is being typed he remains at the foot of my mothers bed watching over her as she finishes her final days on Earth after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He has never really been a pet, more of a "side-kick" and a fantastic one at that.
Doc gets my vote for PFW pet of the month, not for being Man's best friend but for letting man be his best friend.

Name: Raphy
Owned By: Deana & James Hinson of Fletcher
Story:
Hello, my name is Deana and I would like to nominate my Bengal/Maine Coon Mix Raphael (Raphy) for Pet of the Month. Raphy came into our lives last May. It had been four months since my Norwegian Forest Cat mix Hectate had left for the Rainbow Bridge at the very young age of 5. I was still devastated even then when my husband suggested we head up to the shelter to adopt a kitten. I was hesitant but we went. Immediately we saw a group of kittens in one extended kennel, and two slightly older kittens in the kennel above them. Both of them were silver tigers one long haired, one short around 10 weeks of age. My husband fell in love with the long haired kitten whom was dubbed Raphael (which we kept because we couldn't agree on anything else). As my husband filled out the paperwork I held the ! ;little bundle and broke down into tears. He reminded me so much like Hectate when she first came home. Anyway, we were approved and brought him home just two days later. From the start he seemed to understand my broken heart and latched right onto me. Waking me up for attention in the middle of the night, following me around the house, eating only if I fed him, investigating everything I ate or drank, crying if I had to leave him locked in a room without me for any reason. He is now a year and a half old and has turned into a gorgeous long haired tan/chocolate Bengal at nearly 15 pounds of solid muscle. He remains to this day my link to Hectate as my mother jokes that she must have come back to me as him. Who knows, maybe she did because he is exactly like her in personality and behavior. He loves going for walks (only if I take him), camping, playing endlessly with our other cats (Mittens, Salem, Isabelle), taking care of our recently ad! opted kittens (Zeus, Kiara, Vivaldi), wrestling with our fer ret Anubis, and though hates car rides enjoys taking trips to PFW to get new leashes, harnesses, toys, catnip, or even the wonderful Innova cat food that since he was a baby kept trying to steal from the adults and now gets to eat on a regular basis.

Name: Gracie
Owned By: Erica Green of Burlington
Story:
I am a teacher, and was planning on adopting a dog when school was over. I had been religiously checking petfinder.com, to see if any doggies peaked my interest, as I was intent on finding a rescue in the area to take home. I had noticed that there were to be 6 puppies delivered from Georgia to Lisa and Roy of Save our Strays, and I decided to e mail them for an application. Long story short, I was able to get one of these great pups! Gracie is 4 months old, and a great dog. She is happy to have a good home, and she (mostly) leaves the cats alone. She is very social and loves the dog park - she loves to play with the biggest dogs there! She knew how to walk on a leash after 2 days of practice, and learned how to "sit" after one day. We are now working on "lie down" and not jumping on people - of course the treats help. At first I was worried about her activity level, being that she is a mix of what can be two highly nutty breeds, but her temperament is great, and as long as she gets some good exercize each day, she is fine. I am also looking forward to being able to run with her when she is old enough.

Name: Turner
Owned By: Connie Fisher of Burlington
Story:
My dog, Turner, would like to be the PFW pet of the month. He's an old boy who came to us last July when he was 10 and a half years old. He was neglected for a very, very long time. At first, I thought he had come to us to die peacefully and we would make his last few months as comfortable as possible. He could barely get in the car or up the stairs. He's old, I thought~ He was awfully smelly, too! When I tried to bathe him, I realized he had an awful infection on the inside of his back legs. While in the waiting room at the vet, I tried to soothe him by patting his back. I felt something wet on my hand. It was blood! His entire back was covered with blood~ the skin was broken & bleeding. When the vet shaved his hair off and revealed his sores I couldn't hold my tears. The infection was through his body and the vet told me a few more days would have cost Turner his life. Unfortunately, his health issues were only part of our problems. He had no manners at all & pooped in my car! He tried to eat my food right off my fork at dinner! Even worse, Turner was showing aggressive behavior and would bite us when challenged. Our whole world was turned upside down. We felt like he was a time bomb, but I wouldn't put him down, I couldn't give up on him like everyone else had. I believed in him~ I bought books on rehabilatating aggressive dogs, consulted vets & trainers and watched the Dog Whisperer videos repeatedly! Everyone told me he was too old, the aggression would only get worse. Thankfully 'they' were wrong. In the end, our LOVE, patience, and educating ourselves worked. It is now eight months later and he is totally different. He is healthy, gentle and our best friend. He is finally able to enjoy life & just being a dog. He loves hikes, the snow and he runs like the wind~ He is free! Woo hoo! He has his very own pack of humans now! He has changed our lives and taught me many lessons~ The biggest is not to give up hope. He's such a happy dog! It makes me smile each time his tail wags.

Name: Stella
Owned By: Leslie Graham of Shelburne
Story:
"Stella is quite possibley the most loving dog I have ever met. She came to us from West Virginia via Sam Punchar at Random Rescue in Williamstown, VT. We had to put down our dog Charlie in September of '06 and we had started looking for a new canine friend this spring. I should have kept track of how many dogs I met at local rescues and ones I researched through Petfinder.org before we met Stella (then named "Dottie") because, upon reflection, it seems like hundreds! With Stella it was love at first sight! She constantly surprises us with her antics and never fails to shower on the love!"

Name: Max
Owned By: Kathie Knight of South Burlington
Story:
Max is 10 years old, a rescued bird from a Westford bird-rescue lady; my 27 yr old son bought him on Easter 1999. Max was two. That lasted 2 weeks, as he found he had no time for the bird, gave him to his brother, my 30 yr old son, who kept two Cockatiels. That lasted four years, again no time for the birds, the cockatiels went to a good home, but I couldn't let him part with Max. I had just retired from the Postal Service and decided to give Max a try living at my house. My 15-yr old 6-lb white angora cat, Sophie, was the biggest worry, but that was put aside when Max moved in,Sophie went over to the cage, he spread his wings and screeched at her! She ran and to this day won't even LOOK at him!
I have had him now for four years and he is the delight of my life! Gives kisses, steps up, shoulder-sits, his cage is open all day,he's in it only if he wants to be, with newspapers strategically placed under his window perches! I got him the "Taj-Mahal" of bird cages at PFW soon after he came to live here. Store Mgr John helped me get the cage home. I love PFW!
Max doesn't speak, except for something that sounds like "Whatryadoin?" That's what I (want to) hear! He loves his bath, I dry him off with a face cloth and in the winter, the hairdryer on low! In the photo of him looking in the mirror, I told him that's the closest he'll get to a wife! Just no room for two. His tail is 10-12" long, lime green and butter yellow underneath. I never would have thought a little bird would become such a part of the family! He has a distinct personality and is a lot of fun! Just ask Sophie! (Well, maybe not!)

Name: Bri
Owned By: The Baker Family of Georgia
Story:
We adopted Bri from Sweet Border Collie Rescue in NY. She had a rough young life before she ended up in Rescue. She was part of 30+ dogs that were rescued from a breed in PA who neglected and abused his dogs. She had already had two litters by the age 2 and was malnourished, flea infested and had mammory tumors. She arrived in rescue in January and we adopted her in February. During that month in rescue she was spayed and had surgery to remove a very large mammory tumor. She was taken from the only life she had ever known (albeit a bad one) and thrown into a strange situation which involved more people than she had ever met in her life, strange dogs and painful surgeries. Through it all her beautiful loving spirit shined through. On the day we met her she came flying through the door bouncing and licking everyone. She instantly won our hearts. Having very little socialization or real world experience she was rather timid and shy everywhere we went with her but with a glance at us for a reassuring smile she met every person and situation with a wiggle and a lick. To our dismay she developed more mammory tumors and we spent the Fourth of July in the emergency vet service with her. She again had another long traumatic surgery (her third in six months!) to literally open her entire belly area to remove all mammary glands. But again her spirit and love of life brought her through. We are happy to say that a year after she ended up in rescue she is absolutely the most wonderful animal friend a person could ever want. She is gentle and loving yet lively and playful (with very cute butt wiggles), an absolute frisbee fanatic and one of the most comforting friends I have ever had. If there are animal angels, she is one of them. We are hoping that she brightens our lives for many years.

Name: Max
Owned By: James Young & Crystal Flutur of Milton
Story:
Hello, my name is Max. I am about 4 years old but I will always be a puppy at heart. I was left on a farm in Southern Vermont by some people who weren’t supposed to be in the country. Different people came to my home and were acting concerned about, what do they call it, oh, me being a Rottweiler. Apparently, I am a tough guy! Luckily the humane society came and rescued me. I had never been inside before and boy, having a roof over your head certainly makes a difference in Vermont weather. The nice people there realized all I needed was some love and attention and I would give it back tenfold. From there I came to my forever home and I felt like one lucky dog. My new parents brought me to Pet Food Warehouse where they fed me lots of treats and gave me my favorite chew toy—a King Kong! Life was going great! They took me to the doctors to get checked and make sure I was okay--I was kinda a skinny guy back then. Uh-oh, they are saying something about heart worm? What are they talking about, I don’t eat worms! I had to go back there a couple of times and it wasn’t very fun, but Dr. Millie was very nice and now I am all better!! I have since eaten a few King Kongs, but PFW always has more for me. I am busy living life, climbing mountains, chasing tennis balls, and of course, hanging with my best buds. If you see me around, please say hi. Just because I am a tough guy doesn’t mean I’m not friendly, I would LOVE to meet you!

Name: Moxy
Owned By: Katie Milne of Williston
Story:
My name is Katie Milne and this is Moxy my two year old Golden Retriever. Training Moxy was my 8th Grade Challenge Project at Williston Central School. Without his cooperation I never would have been able to complete the project. Moxy is a certified Therapy Dog through Therapy Dogs of Vermont and I am his handler. I am the only junior Therapy Dog hander in the state of Vermont. Moxy was certified as soon as he turned one year old which is the youngest a dog can be tested for Therapy Dog work. As a Therapy Dog Moxy visits the Vermont Respite House, nursing homes, reads at the library and attends many other Therapy Dog events. He does a great job at brightening people's day. So that is why I think Moxy deserves "Pet of the Month."

Name: M.J.
Owned By: Betsy Allen-Pennebaker of Burlington
Story:
I would like to nominate my miracle kitty, MJ, as pet of the month. MJ came into our lives when our downstairs neighbor, a ten-year-old boy who loves animals, came running into the house and said, “Come quickly! There’s a stray kitty outside who’s been hurt and he can’t move!” I grabbed a box and some old towels and ran down the street to where a group of kids were gathered around a motionless little kitten. He couldn’t move his back legs at all and I figured his back was broken. We rushed him off to the vet’s and on the way there I noticed his gorgeous tiger markings and amber eyes, and I thought how sad it was that such a beautiful, healthy kitty had been hurt and would probably have to be put down. However, the vet took some x-rays and to everyone’s surprise, there were no injuries to be seen! They figured he’d had some sort of spinal trauma and asked me if I would like to care for him for a few days to see if there was any change. Of course I said yes, and took the kitty home. The first night was rough, because the kitty couldn’t move and had to have help even to pee and poop. I had to get up every couple of hours to change his bedding. But the next day I took the kitty into work, and he started to try to climb out of his box using only his front legs, so that he could see what was going on around him! This kitty was a fighter! I hadn’t named him, because I didn’t want to fall in love with him before I knew he would be all right, but the guys at work immediately named him “Magic Johnson”, and it stuck – because he really did turn out to make a magical recovery. Once I realized that MJ was determined to get better, I took him down to see Marv Greenberg in Hinesburg, who does animal acupuncture. After one acupuncture treatment MJ’s back toes started to move a little, and over the next few weeks, with regular treatments and herbs, he gradually regained mobility. He spent several weeks scooting around on his butt, pulling himself along with his front legs, but then one wonderful day he got his hind legs under him and took a few steps! MJ has now made a miraculous recovery. He walks almost normally, goes up and down stairs, and pops through our cat door to go outside. He plays with our other cats and races around the house at high speed. He can’t quite jump up onto chairs, and sometimes his back legs slip out from under him when he takes a corner too fast, but otherwise he can do everything that other cats do. He even has a lively, twitchy tail (the last part of him to start moving again). And, the best part of all – he is just the sweetest, sunniest, cuddliest little guy you can possibly imagine. We are so lucky to have our magic kitty, MJ!

Name: Bagel
Owned By: Joan Foley of South Burlington
Story:
I would love to share a story with you about the heroics of our family dog, Bagel. On Jan. 1, 2007 at 2:00am, my husband went into diabetic shock, collapsing on the living room floor with a blood sugar level of 43, totally unresponsive. I was still asleep, unaware of anything going on. Our family dog, Bagel, came into the bedroom and began to hop around as though she had to go out, but much more agitated than usual. When I didn*t get up right away, she started tugging on the sheets, something she has never done. I got up out of bed and usually Bagel is at the back door before I get my slippers on. This time she stayed right by my side until I found my husband on the floor. I think she knew her job had been done, and done well. I believe Bagel saved his life and for that we are all thankful. Bagel is a five year old Beagle mix that we adopted two years ago from the Chittenden County Humane Society. She sure is a winner.

Name: Franklin
Owned By: David & Sherry DuLong of Westford
Story:
Hello, My name is Franklin . I am two years old and I am a rescue. I'm originally from Texas. I arrived in Vermont about two years ago. My home life over the last few years has had its share of ups and downs and I was finally brought into Mountain View Animal Hospital in desperate need of a new home. Thanks the good people at Mountain View, instead of being euthanized, I was fostered until a new home could be found. I now reside in Westford with my new forever family. I have numerous other family pets to keep me company, and I have been assured by my new mom and dad I will never ever have to look for another home again. I love everything about living in Vermont. OK.. honestly, truth be known, your winters are a bit long for my taste, but your woodstoves are OH SOOOO nice and allow me to pass the time more comfortably until I can feel the cool spring grass beneath my hooves once again. I love Pet Food Warehouse because not only are all the people so nice, they were able to provide me with a much needed fleece lined jacket for winter. Pet Food Warehouse has also ensured I will be able to buy the special mini pig food I require to live a long and very happy life with my new forever family.

Name: Zee
Owned By: Brooke Cote of Hinesburg
Story:
My little pup, Zee, has been through a lot in the seven months she has been alive. Zee came into my life thanks to Georgia Animal Rescue and Defence (GARD), a non-profit agency that brings homeless animals from the state of Georgia to Vermont, where low-cost spay/neuter clinics are available and euthanasia is no longer practiced in shelters. When I got her, Zee was severely sick with kennel cough, covered in fleas, and harboring several types of worms. At night I cradled her on my chest while she shivered and coughed. It took months, but the day finally came when the vet pronounced Zee healthy. Though she has been through a lot, Zee's spirit has never been broken. She's a kooky girl with a Southern Belle mentality. Zee may have drained my bank account with vet bills, but she has filled my heart with laughter and love.

Name: Bartlett
Owned By: Christine Hammer of Essex Junction
Story:
I am submitting my dog Bartlett for consideration as the Pet Food Warehouse’s “Pet of the Month.” Bartlett is a seven year old rescued mixed breed we’ve had for six years. She’s very playful and loves to be in the middle of things as the attached photos show. My husband and I were in the middle of doing our annual leaf raking last year and Bartlett got bored just hanging around. She approached the pile of leaves, tying to get our attention. We kept raking so she then laid down in the pile of leaves, still trying to get our attention. We continued to rake. After all, we had a bid job ahead of us. When it became apparent to Bartlett that we weren’t going to stop raking, she seemed to disappear. We didn’t know where she went, so we whistled and called her and her head popped up out of the pile of leaves! She had decided that since we weren’t going to play, she would just play by herself. And so she had buried herself in the pile of leaves. We were glad that we had the camera handy.

Name: Koshka
Owned By: Julie Plovnick & Tom Rogers of Winooski
Story:
I started out life in a wooded ravine behind Tom and Julie’s apartment in Annapolis, Maryland. My brother, mom, and I were feral felines surviving on whatever scraps we could find. Then one day, Julie and Tom trapped us all! My mom was spayed and released. My brother found a home with a nice vet, and I moved in with Julie, Tom, and two other cats. I was pretty scared of everyone at first. Then I became friends with my older siblings and learned to like the attention of (some) humans. Now I like being combed the wrong way with my Zoom Groom, playing with my tail, eating my siblings’ food (when I can get away with it), burrowing under the covers, and dropping toys into my waterbowl. I want to be pet of the month to show people that former ferals can be stars, too!

"Petie" came to Vermont last October thru VT Volunteer Services for Animals out of Bridgewater, VT in a refrigerated tractor trailer truck along with other rescued dogs and cats… He made his way through Vermont, into Williston and into my heart… One of our first stops when he came into town, was non-other than 'Pet Food Warehouse', Williston Road, So. Burlington - where Petie got to pick out (on his own) some lovely 'dog treats', dog food, and some toys ;-) "Petie is one lucky pup ! Not only does he now have a safe, secure and more than loving home in Vermont…. He's also got Pet Food Warehouse !

Name: Charlie Bucket
Owned By: Tiffany & Garrett Hartwell of Port Henry, NY
Story:
I would like to submit our dog "Charlie Bucket" for the pet of the month. He deserves to be pet of the month because he's been through a lot in his short life. He didn't start out as our dog, a friend of ours had him, he began as the runt of the litter, hard enough for a purebred husky like him! Then his old owners let him outside without a
leash and he learned first hand why you don't get in the way of a mini van :( his leg was messed up and his owners could not afford the vet bills. So his leg is a little twisted but he is still able to use it for balance and to hold his bones! (there's no fixing it now, the only other option is to amputate) But he doesn't let that stop him, he's as
fast as any other dog I've seen and really we don't think he knows he's any different.
His old owners got a divorce and neither one could take him with them. They even thought about putting him down. So we volunteered to take him. He's been living happily ever after with us. He has lots of doggie friends that come to visit him and two cats to pester. He LOVES going for rides in the car (he comes with us every day!) He's so
spoiled he gets to stay with my husbands grandmother during the day while we're at work and then goes back home with us in the evening. But, boy is he happy to see us when we get there to pick him up! He even does his own little "happy dance" as we have named it. I have never seen a dog with more character than our Charlie Bucket (named
after charlie & the chocolate factory) He deserves to be pet of the month!

Name: Ginger
Owned By: Karen & Brennan of Colchester
Story:
Ginger is our "million dollar mutt." We adopted her as an eight week old puppy last June, and did not have to pay a penny for her. What a deal! She was so beautiful, passive, obedient, and affectionate we just loved her from day one. She became our baby. At four months old Ginger had developed a strage discoloration on the top of her nose. After observing it for a month we had it biopsied when Ginger was under getting spayed. The results were shocking and unthinkable: cancer. Our hearts broke not knowing what would happen to our sweet, playful, shy little puppy. Because of the location on her nose, she would require laser surgery accompanied by steriods. We were fortunate that her form of tumor was not aggressive. After her "nose job" Ginger recovered as if nothing was ever wrong! The wound on her nose filled in with scar tissue, and even took on the black color again. At 11 mos. old, we noticed yet another small discoloration on her nose right at the margin of the scar tissue. We went ahead and had that lasered off, too. Ginger is 14 mos old now and still bears this scar. You'd never know our dog had two "nose jobs" by the way she plays in the mud and chases frogs! We now realize that Ginger chose us as her family because she knew we would make sure she had a long, healthy, life, no matter what the cost.

Name: Winston
Owned By: Liz & Ray Boyce of St. Albans
Story:
My name is Winston. I was a rescue dog. When my new family took me home, I was 85lbs., very scared and hungry. I've now been with my new family for 18 months. I now weigh 147lbs. I have a step-brother, also a St. Bernard. I have lots of toys from Pet Food Warehouse and my step-brother and I get treats and home-cooked meals all the time. I'm still a little nervous after being on the streets for 2 years, but Mom takes good care of me. I was scheduled to be put to sleep for being too aggressive but Mom and Dad knew I needed some TLC and time to realize I wouldn't be abused and hurt all the time. Rescue works and so does the time and patience of new owners.

Name: Mr. Bun-Bun & Hoppers
Owned By: Lanaya Sandberg of Burlington
Story:
This is a picture of my two adorable rabbits on Easter morning! It was quite an eventful morning searching for Easter eggs, which had bunny food pellets in them. The baby bunny, Hoppers, is two months old and all of this excitement made him quite tired so he took a nap in his Easter basket. The larger rabbit, Mr. Bun-Bun, obviously is so huge that he could not fit with Hoppers, so he just sat beside his buddy. These are some of the best animals that I have ever had. I know they would both like to be the official Pet of the Month!

|
Name: Winston
Owned By: Jim & Suzy Barth of Huntington
Story:
My name is Sir Winston, & I'd like to tell you my story. I was born in Winston (how I got my name) No. Carolina 4 years ago. I don't know much about my early months, but I was found roaming the streets a very sick dog with Parvo, & very hungry. Some very nice people from the Saint Rescue Center found me and took me with them to see a doctor. they kept me until I was well enough to travel. I was then placed with a man that was to take care of me until I was adopted. Unfortunately the man was not as he appeared to be, & when we got to his place he tied me to a post on a very short leash. there I stayed with very little to eat, in all kinds of weather with no shelter of any kind. One day a girl came to find a big dog for her 4-H Project back in Ohio, & lucky for me, I was the one for her. When we got to my new home I was given a bath, combed of the mats, nails trimmed, and a big dish of food and water. But you know what/ the best thing she ever gave me was her love, with lots of hugs. We went on to win several titles at the states fairs for the next 3 years. My life was very grand, but there came a time when like all children, she grew up and was about to go off to college to be a veterinarian. She tried to find a place that I could go, but because of my size she couldn't find a place big enough for me. Because she loved me so much, she decided to find a new home for me. She became acquainted with a lady in Vermont that had just lost her Saint after 10 1/2 years, and was looking for another. The lady, her husband, & their Bassett drove 13 hours to meet me, & of course fell in love with me right away, & I with them. At this time I was tall lanky, skinny (108 pounds) & with feet that were 4 inches across, but the lady looked into my eyes saw the love, & hugged me tight. So off I went to another state to begin a new life with new people. It was a great ride, they took me to hotels to stay, & the people there were very nice to me, & they even stopped for the MANY times that a big dogs needs too sniff a tree. When I got home I found that not only did I have a family to love & take care of, but I had several grand children, lots of toys, & a dog to play with! The next best thing that I have is a pool for those hot lazy hazy days of summers in Vermont, however I learned the hard way that I can't swim!!! so now I just sit and watch over the pool in case they need me. I now weigh 137 pounds, have filled out in all the right places, my hair is good, & my soul is wonderful. What a great life I now have, it's true that LOVE does make the world go round.

Name: Qi
Owned By: Kathryn Smith of Burlington
Story:
This is Qi (pronounced "Chee"). He was a young stray who found and declared us his people four years ago by running up as we got out of the car and refusing to leave. We searched for an owner and in a bizarre twist of fate we actually found out that he was part of a feral litter born in someone's basement and was the one cat who got out and ventured almost all the way across Burlington to be with us. This is how he got his name. You see, in Chinese, his name means "life energy."
He is the sweetest cat I have ever known. Not prone to fighting, he is a mother to all other cats in the neighborhood who will let him. He licks them clean, and if we allow them in the apartment, he sleeps curled around them in his favorite chair. And somehow he manages to stay hairball free!
He's recently taken a blow as my old cat, who likes no other cats, moved back in with us. But Qi remains good natured and tries valiantly to play with the other cat though he's scorned every time. I think he deserves an honor all his own. Don't you?

Name: Ramon
Owned By: Ann and Peter Picard of East Fairfield
Story:
Ramon is our pet of a lifetime. He was rescued as a skinny, dusty and almost chewed to death five month old kitten. We were staying at a villa at a lovely little Mexican beach town and one day this tiny kitten was crying under the caretaker's van. Ramon, as he turned out to be named by us, was in shock having been bitten by a dog, we assume. He had enormous bite wounds, no tail and a crooked ear. We immediately adopted him, falling deeply in love with him in the first instant we saw him. We brough him home with us and he was given a set of wings on the airplane. Everyone who met him wanted to adopt him. But by then he was our son!
He still has no tail and a bent ear. His wounds cleaned up nicely. Most importantly he is the sunniest, sweetest and most loving of all animals we have ever known. He is just like a little person. It turns out he is most likely a Pixie-Bob cat given the way he behaves and his little chirp of a meow. He does a million endearing things that would take up too much room to tell. He is the joy of our lives and our other three cats adore him. He is a very special member of our family and it was our luckiest day to find a little waif so far away.

Story:
I think my new kittens should be your "Pet of the Month." I got Rudy & Murphy when they were 10 weeks old at the Humane Society. In this picture, they are 15 weeks old and are a real joy to our family. I lost my two "elderly" cats. Toby was 20 years old and Kayce was 19. Name: Willis
Owned By: Kristine Zaker and Sean Larock of Burlington
Story:
Howdy! My name is Willis. I am a handsome 4 year old male who loves basking in the sun as you can see. I have a cute spotted a nose and a nice white bowtie. I love catnip, toys, treats, and all of the strings that hang off my mom's pants! I have a favorite blanket which you can see me sitting on in the picture. I love waking my parents up in the morning so they can go to work, and love sharing a little of my mom's ice cream at night. I am one of the most affectionate cats you will ever meet, which you may not have thought if you had met me 3 years ago. I was abandoned by my last owner and was left to fend for myself with the last remaining water and food I had for a week! She decided she didn't want the apartment or me anymore. Luckily the owner of the apartment found me. I was malnourished and had chewed most of the hair off my tail. But it turns out the apartment owner was the boss of my new parent's friend. It turned out my parents were looking for a cat at the time and when they saw me they couldn't resist (even though I did put up a fight at first). Thankfully they were patient with me and gave me time to trust again. Now I am a healthy, happy, and beautiful cat that is treated like a king.

Name: Elroy
Owned By: Ken & Susan Nussbaum of Richmond
Story:
Meet Elroy! He is a 14-year-old beagle whose elderly owner died and left him to the
Frontier Animal Society of Vermont. Our family relocated here from the Chicago suburbs in January and found Elroy on the Petfinder website in February. We went to meet him and took him right home!
Elroy fit right in with our family. He loves the kids (Benjamin and Sonia,
in the photos with him) and every child in the neighborhood knows him. Even
the toddlers can come right up to him and he doesn't mind a bit! He enjoys
going for walks around town and hiking at the Audubon Center, and he can
always be counted on to have his nose to the ground and tail held high!
Springtime has brought out his beagle bark-howl as motorcycles, bicycles,
skateboards and pretty much anything with wheels capture his attention and
get a good rise out of him!
He has plenty of spunk for 14 when he's out and about, but when indoors
Elroy is content to lounge on his dog bed or bask in the warmth of sunbeams
coming in through the window. He jumps clear off the ground when his leash
comes out, he enjoys a good petting every day, and he is very fond of meaty
treats and doggie ice cream!
Elroy is in reallly good health, especially for a geriatric dog, and he even
made a very quick recovery from surgery to remove a tumor from his chest.
He seems good as new and is ready for another visit to see his friends at
Pet Food Warehouse, where he prefers greeting other dogs to the free treats
from staff!
Some people think we're nuts to adopt him because of his age, but we
couldn't stand the thought of him living out his life in a shelter when
there is no reason for him not to be in a home. He is the greatest dog and
we just love him! We feel so lucky to have Elroy in our family and we hope
he has plenty or retirement time left to spend with us.

Name: Benny
Owned By: Karen Powers of Lyndonville
Story:
Benny was an owner surrender due to them moving overseas. They wanted to find him a good home that could care for his special needs. He is a Christmas baby and came to our home as a foster pug. He had one eye that he is blind and is useless to him, the other eye was bulging and the eye lid was not properly closing over the eye. We took him to an eye specialist Dr Koch and he did a surgery to close more of the eyelid over the eye- therefore reducing the exposed eye area and allowing the eyelid to close over it properly. I call it the eye lid tuck:) They stitched both the inside and outside of the eye lid shut. He wore a nice collar for a while and has recovered from the surgery. He has the beginning of PK and we are treating this now. However, while in foster care- we were going on vacation and needed to find him another home to care for him. This lasted one day- the new foster mom called several times saying he won't drink, play, eat etc he just screeched and cried and cried for us. She was not new to fostering and knew the separation issues. Like she said- he had picked his home. When I went to get him he plopped his head on my shoulder and fell to sleep with an exhausted yawn. We took him back home with us and the first thing he did was run over to our old pug Gizmo and give him kisses. Gizmo has since left us to join the rainbow bridge and you have to wonder if Benny knew his time was short. Benny has since been adopted by us and has been there to take the pain and grief of losing Gizmo. He is a wonderful addition to our family and the remaining pugs Ebony and Molly adore him.

Name: Copper
Owned By: Erin Prom of Shelburne
Story:
My pet's name is Copper and he is a rabbit. I got him as a Christmas present. He is the color of a penny, that is why I named him Copper. He is a small rabbit, this rabbit can be called a lop rabbit. Most of the time his ears are down and flat across his head. It looks so funny and cute. Sometimes he just sits there while I clean his cage and he has to sit in the tub because I have nowhere else to put him. So, he just sits there like nothing is going wrong while I clean his cage. The other really funny thing about Copper is sometimes he just relaxes in his litter box and has one paw out with his ears flopped down and just thinks he knows EVERY thing! Well, that is just all I have to say about Copper. He is just one lovable rabbit. I guess that is why I love him so much.

Name: Doobie
Owned By: Jenn O'Guin of Hardwick
Story:
Doobie is one of four cats who share my one bedroom apartment in Hardwick. I used to live in Ohio, and I fostered his mamma and the litter of kittens Doobie came from for a local cat rescue group there. Needless to say, who could resist a face like this, so when I returned Mamma and the other kittens to be permanently adopted, Doobie stayed with me! I bottle fed him for a couple weeks as a baby (he was the tiny little weak runt), so we have a special kind of bond. He's a great cat, but he tends to get a tad chubby and has a sensitive stomach, so he eats only Innova Lite kitty kibble and California Natural canned food from Pet Food Warehouse! If his kibble bowl gets emptied in the middle of the night, he will poke me in my neck with his claw and meow directly over my ear until I get up and refill it. Doobie always circles the box when I order my cat food from you guys, he knows it's from PFW! Thanks for shipping to me out here in the middle of no-where,Doobie really appreciates it! Someday maybe we will come see the store in person!

Name: Brody
Owned By: Lee Diamond of Richmond
Story:
My name is Brody. That's me in the photo in the back of the car on my way to a hiking trail! I love Pet Food Warehouse and all the doggie treats you guys give me. I use the Petwash in the summer when I roll in bad stuff in the woods.
The treats in the Petwash are the only way my owner can get me up that ramp and into that tub. Even though I am part labrador, I don't really like getting wet. I would rather stand in the river and watch the little guppies swim by me.
I love my Fat Cat frisbee from Pet Food Warehouse and I have tried a few types of the raw food you guys carry there. Mostly I eat Innova (green bag) and real raw food mixed together. I am going on 11 years old but my vet says I could live another 10 years the way I am going!

He loves to chase snowballs and shower his human friends with kisses. He insists on his couch time with mom every evening by pestering me subtly until I settle in on the couch with him. Name: Alfie
Owned By: Lee Nelson of South Burlington
Story:
Alfie was orphaned 4 years ago when his human person was killed in a motorcycle accident. My son intercepted him and brought him to our home as I had just had a cat euthanized that I had for 16 years. My family fell in love with him immediately as he is quite gorgeous! The best part about Alfie is his fiercely independent spirit blended with a quirky personality...for example, he climbs up the door moldings and hangs on like a monkey, looks around, then quickly releases himself and falls to the floor. He loves to hang out and sleep (as you can see in one of the photos), particularly loves all my women friends, enjoys a daily brushing, and thrives on compliments about how handsome he is....he's quite the fellow.

Name: Jenny
Owned By: Patty Griffin of Williston
Story:
My cat is a poster child...read why! Jenny-Any-Dots was discovered in a Maine shelter about seven years ago. Who would know she was a Bengal? Instead of the classic gold and black, her colors were a muted silver and mauve. Huddled in the back of her cage, she looked like an ordinary tabby lacking social graces. I blinked a slow blink. "I am friendly. How about you?" She blinked back and came to the front of the cage to inspect my fingers. Rubbing happily, she flopped on her side, showing lovely rosettes on her belly. Since that time, Jenny-Jelly has shown us how truly different Bengals are from other cats: 1) She has a broad vocabulary of chirps, calls, and wails. She enjoys banter back and forth with her human companions, and has been known to converse on the phone. 2) Her toilet habits are like other cats, but she will also do her "business" in the grass like a dog. 3) She greets the neighborhood dogs happily, tail raised in a happy question mark. 4) The other cat in the house, an Alpha Siamese male, finds her to be exceedingly annoying and too aggressive. She doesn't take a hint, though; she follows him like a brat sister. 5) The cat has an inexhaustible sense of play; she has her own basket of toys which she raids regularly. Jenny is a wonderful companion, for she is funny, cheerful, interactive, and loyal. That’s why she is a great candidate for Pet of the Month!

Name: Ulster
Owned By: Lilly Bock-Brownstein and Louisa Wakefield
Story:
Ulster is a 1 1/2-year-old yellow lab. He currently lives in Burlington, Vermont. Though he might be young, he has responsibilities that most of us don't have. That is because he is training to be the eyes of a visually impaired person. We have been training him constantly since he was just 7 weeks old. There are many other guide dogs in training in this region. They all have the same responsibilities as Ulster. When they have completed their training they will go on to lead a blind person across busy highways, past barking dogs, and so much more. Once in a while when you walk downtown you might see working guide dogs with harnesses on working beside their blind owner, but remember never to pet them unless you ask! We love Ulster very much, but we know in our hearts that he will become a visually impaired person's miracle. Ulster will be leaving us in one month to get more advanced training at the guide school in Yorktown Heights, New York. From there he will lead on his new owner.

Name: Gracie
Owned By: Dick & Dawn St. George of Charlotte
Story:
This is Gracie. Many people mistake her for a basset hound but she is blood hound. She is owned by Dick and Dawn St. George. She arrived from Florida on 2-10-04 and is still trying to figure out what that white stuff is all about. Gracie spends most of her days with her daddy at the construction site and when she gets home she makes sure that the other animals have missed her by seeing just how many of them she can annoy at once. She also goes to the fire department and visits the fire fighters after they are done with their training. Gracie is just beginning her training to learn to be a search and rescue dog. So far she can track up to 600 yards which is great for a puppy that is only 15 weeks old. Everyone loves to have Gracie visit and Gracie loves to show off her tricks just to see what person will fall for that sad little face and reward her from the cookie jar. So Gracie would love to be considered as pet of the month because that cookie jar is getting empty!

Name: T.T.
Owned By: Ben & Jennifer McJunkin of Colchester
Story:
TT is a most unusual pet, especially for guinea pig. For starters, TT doesn’t actually stand for anything. That was his name when we adopted him from a shelter in Boston, and it is actually rather suitable, since TT himself is a bit of an enigma. He is a mix of breeds (we don’t know which ones). He is old (we think) but has a childish spirit that can’t be suppressed. He never fails to remind us when his feeding time is (in fact, he can squeak and eat the same time) is not afraid of strangers, and will never hide when approached. He loves to be petted, but only on his rather large nose. And he gets along great with other species (as this picture clearly shows). We’re not really sure what to think of our only boy (we have 3 female guinea pigs, as well), sometimes we are convinced he is not so much a pig as a very tiny dog, but we love him and he loves us, and that’s what matters.

Name: Lyghda, Tillie, Leo & Mars
Owned By: Nina Daniel of Starksboro
Story:
From left to right starting with Black Pug: Lyghda, Tillie, Leo & Mars (Siamese Cat) - as a week old kitten Mars began to nurse on Lyghda... as a former mother, now spayed, she did not seem to mind! She seemed to enjoy it and was comforted by it! As Mars grew he began to also follow whatever commands the pugs were doing; "sit" "go for a walk" and "crate." They all love each other, sleep in a pile together, play together. Mars will even nurse sometimes on the other pugs even though Leo is a male!! Mars also cleans everyone's faces. To get them to sit all together I just ask everyone to "come" and then to "sit." One big happy family! Leo is a rescue who came from a bad situation. Tillie's former owner was a bit busy for her. Lyghda came from a good home to mine. Mars is, well, just a great, loving cat.

Name: Kasei
Owned By: Erica Ferland of Essex Junction
Story:
I found your site after visiting BurlingtonFreePress.com - I notice it's been significantly upgraded since my last visit! Nicely done! I'd like to nominate my golden retriever Kasei for customer pet of the month. Kasei is everything a golden retriever is supposed to be - kind, gentle, smart as a whip, outgoing - loves kids without ever having any of his own - he just adores people! Kasei welcomes each and every visitor to the house with a PFW "baby" - we're big fans of the floppy fleece collection - tough soft fleece toys! He's got a laundry basket full of them! He relishes his visits to PFW where he always gets a special treat and an ear or belly rub from the outgoing pet people that he meets there. Kasei especially likes to pick out new toys when we stop in for Innova, rawhide and other goodies (he asked Santa for a grunting turtle this year). I've attached our holiday photo! Kasei loves mugging it up for the camera!
Cheers to you and yours!

This is my oldest cat COCO she is 7 years old she likes to sleep on top of my son's bunk bed. I've been feeding her this new food from Pet Food Warehouse and she has finally gained some weight. The other food she was on didn't help her out and she was so skinny you could see her ribs but as you can see know with this new food she looks more filled out and her coat is more softer. I wanted to thank the sale person on Shelburne Road for helping me in finding this food for her and my two other cats.
