Question: How can I keep my dog cool in the hot summer weather?
Dear Valerie,
There are many things you can do to keep your dog cool during the summer: If your dog is indoors during the day, you can leave ice cubes in their water bowl, leave a fan or the air conditioner running, or even purchase a special water dish designed to keep the water cool. Fans with icepacks attached, and even frozen toys and cool mats are also available. Remember to keep windows and curtains closed to reduce the amount of sunlight and humid air coming into the house. If your dog is outside all day, make sure they have a shaded area, or dog house to take refuge in. You can also purchase something like the Kool Dogz treat dispenser - which allows you to freeze toys and treats in a "bucket" of water, then leave the giant "ice cube" on a stand for your pet to lick - and as it melts, they get special treats! When you return home, you can also give your dog ice cubes or frozen treats or place a cool towel or wash cloth on their neck. It is important, in extreme heat, to limit play and keep your pet calm so they will not over heat. Also, try to keep them from walking on pavement as the hot surface can burn the pads of their feet. Never leave your pet in a parked car or outdoors in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. |
Question: Our dog is 13 yrs old and is a diabetic. What is the best food for her ?
We would recommend a grain free diet - since grain free formulas have the lowest sugar content. Evo is one of our most popular grain free lines, and they have a brand new senior formula! There are also many other options available, and our staff would be happy to find the best food for your pet! |
Question: What do you recommend for a diabetic dog? I have heard that you should have a low fat and high fiber diet. What do you suggest? He is an older dog 13yrs and a bit overweight also.

Question: My dog has allergies, one of the worst being to dust mites. What are some pet safe products I can use on my upholstered furniture and area rugs to eliminate dust mites in the home?
Hello my name is Philip Trussell, I know your frustrations with uncontrollable allergy issues. I had a bloodhound that was allergic to dust mites and wool. I wish there were the products then that are available now. Pet Food Warehouse carries a couple of products that could help. First there is an item called FleaVac. This is a product that you put in your vacuum. The base is sodium bentonite (100% natural clay) which has been saturated with mint oil and cedar oil. Parasites like fleas and mites have an exoskeleton which they breathe thru - the parasite gets sucked into the vacuum and the clay with natural insecticides impact the parasite and suffocate it.
After vacuuming we have a spray that is quite cool. It is called d-flea from Natural chemistry. This is a area spray for beds, furniture baseboards ect. There is a stool softener in this product that breaks down the exoskeleton of the parasite and there is caster bean oil in the formula that makes the flea or parasite basically implode and die. These are the only products that I feel PFW carries that you could use and are 100% natural. Please stop in and one of our sales staff can further assist you with these items.
Thank you

Question: My cat is about 11 mos old and continuously drags his water dish across the room until all the water has sloshed over the side. I've put the dish on a plastic mat to avoid mess but he'll pull it off the mat or spill all of it on the mat and then pull the mat around. I tried putting less water in but to no avail. I've also attempted to put the water in different parts of the room and have attempted to give it to him in a metal bowl with rubber bottom that was heavier. I clean the water dish quite frequently, so I don't think he's doing it because he doesn't think the water is clean.
He does really enjoy water - more than I expected a kitten would. He sits in the sink even with the faucet on and will hop into the shower with me. He drowns all of his toys in his water dish and I frequently find his toys in the shower.
I would just put the bowl in the shower, but I try to keep him out of that part of the house when I'm away to keep him out of trouble.
Any advice?
To the proud owner of the aqua kitty. I guess it could be worse I know of some cats that have shredding habits. Curtains, chairs, couches everything in theier path would be shredded. My name is Phil Trussell. I have been in the pet industry for over twenty years and your story is definitely one of the cutest. Maybe more from my point of view than yours.
I do have a couple of suggestions for your kitten. It seems like water stimulation is important for he or she. Pet Food Warehouse carries a large assortment of auto water fountains. Some of them are a slow flow of water, running down a ramp. Some of them are a trickle into a pool of water. The price range starts at $29.99 and goes up to $79.99. All of the fountains would be heavy enough so the kitty wouldn’t be able to drag it around. I would suggest putting a ping pong ball in the fountain which would roll around with the movement of the water and create more stimulation for kitty. Hopefully that would prevent him from drowning the rest of the toys. On Saturday April 23rd PFW will be having a store wide 25% off accessories sale (the day before Easter). The fountains will be on sale then.
The other suggestion is a ceramic bowl, which would be heavier than the stainless steel or plastic ones you have tried in the past. I’m sure that your 11 mo old will outgrow this juvenile habit. Life is just too entertaining now and in the future it will all be about sleeping.
One other quick thought is a window perch or cat veranda that sits in the window for safe outside stimulation with the birds. These are available at PFW as well.
Please stop in and let our sales staff guide you in the right direction.
Thank you!

Question: I live a large house constructed out of big, soft-wood pine beams. The stairs, railings, floors & door jams all are very susceptible to kitty claw marks, and my housemate is not pleased with the scratches already left from my well-behaved but somewhat hyper cats leaping & climbing. The cats have not been intentionally using the wood work as scratching posts, but their sharp nails have been leaving damage accidentally from climbing maniacally up the banisters & jumping from beam to beam.
I bought Soft Paws for my cats, but they are so incredibly hyper it would take either a sedative (sad face) or super-human strength for me - alone - to apply them. It took me days to simply clip their front claws.
Please give advice on how to prepare my cats for having the Soft Paws applied & how to do it myself. (Personally, I think it will take 2 people...)
Would you recommend bringing them to a groomer to have this done? Is there a groomer who can apply cat claw sheaths?
I am at my wit's end! :-P
We would recommend going to a vet (or a groomer) to have the Soft Paws applied. They know what they are doing, and this way, your cats won't associate this experience with you or your house. Start by asking your vet, and they should be able to help you, or point you in the right direction! There are also other home remedies that might either deter your cats from scratching/using certain surfaces as well, which our staff could help you with! |
Question: We just found our first tick on our 2yr old lab. We use give her advantix once a month, what else can we do for prevention? And what tips do you have for finding them in her thick coat?
Hi there -
Sometimes topical medications can wash off if a dog is in water within a few days after application, or it could be that the labs fur is so thick that the tick was not repelled by the medication. We would recommend also using something like the Pet Naturals Protect Flea & Tick repellent spray or wipes. This can be applied to your pet before you go outside for a walk (and reapplied after swimming) - the natural oils mask the scent of your pet, making it "invisible" to ticks. As for finding ticks, thoroughly patting down or "massaging" your dog is the best way, but a flea & tick comb may also be helpful.
Best of luck! |
Question: What food would be a good choice for a dog with a sensitive stomach? My dog is currently on Hill's prescription diet kibble based on our vet's recommendation. We would like to find something to feed her from PFW.
When a dog has food sensitivities, we generally recommend formulas from California Natural. They have a limited ingredient panel, which consists of one protein source, one carb source and some natural oils. By feeding foods with very limited ingredients, it is much easier to pinpoint the source of the allergy or sensitivity. California Natural offers grain free formulas as well. We would be happy to provide a sample bag for you to test with your pet! |
Question: I'm looking for high qulaity dog food that is low in protien. My 14 yrs old dog was just diagnosis with kidney disease. any suggestions
We would recommend checking with your vet to confirm if it is kidney disease or kidney failure (and whether you need low protein, or if it's the quality of protein). We do offer some formulas that are low in protein. Innova Senior (18% protein, 8% fat) and Innova Senior Canned Food (4.4% protein, 3.2% fat); Pronature Holistic Senior (18% protein, 10% fat) and Wellness Senior (18% protein, 10% fat). |
Question: What can I use to eliminate skunk odor on my dog. I used the peroxide and baking soda bath which did help but he still has some of the skunk odor.
After you give him the bath, it would be good to use a skunk odor remover like Simple Solution Skunk Odor Eliminator (make sure you use if full concentrate, don't dilute it). You can leave it on for 24 hours and then re-give the peroxide bath. |
Question: My long haired dog always get a hot spot on his beautiful tail in August until he chews all the hair off. What natural remedies/products are there to first, stop him from biting/scratching and second, heal the area?
Hi there!
It sounds like it could be a flea allergy, or some ther allergy - you might try using a flea preventative if that is where the issue is coming from. You can also try using coconut oil to treat the hotspot, it is antifungal and antibacterial and a natural healer. |
Question: Do you sell food grade Diatomaceous Earth for flea and parasite control? Thanks. |
